Sony Mobile has been rolling out a new firmware update for its flagship Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 family (Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Compact and XZ2 Premium), which moves the firmware number from 52.0.A.8.14 to build version 52.0.A.8.25. The latest update includes the 1 April 2019 Android security patches. There is little else that we have noticed has changed, but if you have updated to this build, please chime in with your experiences in the comments below.

Sony Mobile is rolling out a new firmware update for the Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XZ Premium that moves the build number from 47.2.A.10.28 to version 47.2.A.10.45. A new firmware update has stated to roll today for Sony Xperia XA variants. Firmware build number 33.2.A.3.74 is rolling for the single SIM Xperia XA (F3111, F3113, F3115), whilst build number 33.2.B.3.74 is rolling for the dual SIM Xperia XA Dual (F3112, F3116). The new update is live across all variants.
The update moves the build template from 33.2.X.2.XX to 33.2.X.3.XX, which suggests there may be some tangible changes in this new firmware. However, we have not come across a changelog, so please let us know what you’ve noticed once you’ve updated. As usual, please find the FTF firmware links for each Xperia XA variant below.

Sony Slovakia held a press conference earlier today and also let slip when its Xperia devices would receive the update to Android 7.0 Nougat. According to a Sony slide, the Sony Xperia XZ and X Performance will be the first devices to receive the Android N update in October 2016. The Xperia X and X Compact are expected to follow in November 2016.
We should then see the 2015 Xperia Z series be updated around December 2016. This will include updates for the Xperia Z5 family, the Xperia Z3+ as well as the Xperia Z4 Tablet. Finally, the Xperia XA and XA Ultra will be updated in ‘early 2017’, which could mean any time up until March 2017.
All of the handsets mentioned in the roadmap are the same as officially mentioned by Sony as the devices to be updated. There were no new devices mentioned, which means it looks increasingly likely that other 2015 Xperia devices such as the Xperia M4 Aqua/M5 and C4/C5 Ultra may not see the update to Android Nougat.

A new firmware build recently started to roll for the Sony Xperia XA series with version number 33.2.A.3.81 for the single SIM models and 33.2.B.3.81 for the dual SIM models. Users are reporting this to be a stable update, although it does little to improve battery life, which is the phones main weakness. The FTF firmware files for all variants are available to download below, which includes Google security patches to 1 August 2016.

Sony Mobile is currently rolling a new firmware update for the Xperia XA which moves the build number from 33.2.X.3.81 to 33.2.X.4.70. Unfortunately, this is not the Android Nougat update that users are waiting for, but it does move the Google security patches from 1 August 2016 to 5 January 2017.
Software build number 33.2.A.4.70 is rolling to the Xperia XA (F3111, F3113, F3115), whilst version number 33.2.B.4.70 is rolling to the Xperia XA Dual (F3112, F3116). Sony has a history of picking up design awards for its products, it has won various awards for its Xperia smartphones in the past, including red dot prizes as well as iF Design Awards. In terms of the latter, the 2017 iF Design Awards have been presented and it is good to see Sony Mobile pick up three awards for its smartphones, including the Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact and Xperia XA.
Sony also managed to pick up three Gold awards for three of its products including the PlayStation VR (PS VR) virtual reality system for PlayStation 4, the Future Lab Program

Android 7.0 Nougat has started to seed for the Xperia XA, which follows on from the release of Nougat for the XA Ultra yesterday. We have noticed that the Nougat update is live across all five variants of the Xperia XA including the F3111, F3113, F3115 single SIM models, as well as the F3112, F3116 dual SIM variants. Sony commenced the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Xperia XA and XA Ultra just over a week ago, after a long wait. However, Sony Mobile pulled the Nougat update for these devices around a week ago with little notice or explanation.
We reached out to Sony to find out the reasons for halting the update, who confirmed that the update has been temporarily paused due to small “inconsistencies related to the over-the-air delivery system”. Sony has reassured that the update will start again as soon as possible – we’ll keep you posted once it kicks off again.
“We’ve temporarily paused the Android 7.0 upgrade for Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra due to minor performance inconsistencies related to the over-the-air delivery system. Regardless of whether a user has been able to successfully run the upgrade or not, there is no detrimental impact on device performance or loss of existing user data. We’re aiming to re-commence the rollout as soon as possible with a seamless upgrade experience for all users, and will provide a further update in due course.”
We recently reported that Sony Mobile had temporarily suspended the Android 7.0 Nougat firmware update for the Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra, due to “inconsistencies related to the over-the-air delivery system”. We were told that the update would be kick-started again shortly, and we’re happy to report that the Nougat update is now live.
Sony Mobile is rolling out slightly newer build numbers versus the previous firmware. Xperia XA users should be on the lookout for build number 33.3.A.0.131 (versus 33.3.A.0.127 previously), while Xperia XA Ultra owners will receive build number 36.1.A.0.182 (versus 36.1.A.0.179 previously). Sony Mobile has updated the Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra with new firmware updates that adds the 5 August 2017 security patches. There is no change to Android version, so both handsets remain on Android 7.0 Nougat. The Xperia XA moves from build number 33.3.A.0.131 to version 33.3.A.1.97, while Xperia XA Ultra moves from build number 36.1.A.0.182 to version 36.1.A.1.86. Sony Mobile released a firmware update for the Xperia XA a few weeks back that updated the security patch from 5 August 2017 to 6 November 2017. The new update moves the build number from 33.3.A.1.97 to version 33.3.A.1.115.
However, this update is only live on two variants of the Xperia XA – the single SIM F3111 and F3113. Sony has not updated any of the other three Xperia XA variants to this new firmware build. The FTF firmware files are available to download below.

Sony Mobile has released a number of updates for older phones recently. First up last year’s flagship devices the Xperia XZ3 and the XZ2 family (XZ2, XZ2 Compact and XZ2 Premium) have received the May 2019 Android security updates. The build numbers have moved from 52.0.A.8.25 to 52.0.A.8.50.
Some even older handsets got updates out of the blue. This includes the Xperia XA which saw its firmware move from 33.3.A.1.115 to build 33.3.A.1.126, with the 5 December 2017 Android security patch. Its sibling, the Xperia XA Ultra, received an update from 36.1.A.1.106 to 36.1.A.1.112, but with the same 5 January 2018 Android security patch.
Lastly, the old budget Xperia E5 received a minor update, moving the build number from 37.0.A.2.248 to version 37.0.A.2.252.
